History:

In 2009, the automotive market experienced a sales decline. The ensuing hysteria brought many car manufacturers to the brink of bankruptcy. Chrysler had to apply for bankruptcy protection that same year and was rescued by the government. Later, Fiat acquired a 20% stake and control over the management of Chrysler, gradually increasing its stake to 58.5%. The remaining 41.5% was owned by the employee fund VEBA, and according to the 2009 agreement, Fiat had an option to purchase this stake. Due to disagreements over the share price, Fiat completed the takeover on January 21, 2014.

Another significant milestone in the history of the FCA group was announced in November 2019, when the merger agreement between FCA and PSA was officially announced. The reason for the merger was to increase the competitiveness of all affected brands, addressing today’s challenges such as emission limits, digitization, autonomous driving, etc. The new group was named STELLANTIS. It officially came into existence on January 16, 2021, at which time the Groupe PSA and FCA ceased to exist.
